Boxmoor Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Sarrat on Sun 13 Jul 2008 at 2pm
Boxmoor Cricket Club Won by 27 runs
Match report
Sarratt won the toss and elected to field. This was a toss that was better to lose as the pitch was one that having had a crowd gathered to watch the Carter's Steam Fair firework display the evening prior on the pitch and the wet we weather throughout the week, leaving it difficult to assess the way the pitch would play.
The opening pair of Luke Hinton and Ian Gorringe strode to the wicket with the purpose of two batsman that had approximately 8 hours sleep between them and one or two beverages enjoyed the night/morning before. After a slow start (runs and the pace of the pitch), Iggy tried to force the issue from and played round one trying to hit the ball into the fair, some might say that perhaps the continual movement behind bowler may not have helped, but the bails dislodged and Iggy back in the clubhouse for 10. Chris Dunscombe entered the game and quickly departed, with a slightly contentious LBW decision for 0. Next in was U-15 batsman Matt Chapman, who in his previous innings had been run out without facing a ball, now facing the tough task of coming in with 19 runs on the board and 2 wickets down.
Luke and Matt batted for approximately 20 over's together and putting on a stand over over 100 runs together, which saw Luke get past his 50 and Matt supporting at the other end with a wonderful batting display with shots placed beautifully all around the ground. Fatigue finally took its toll on both Matt (38) and Luke (69), both wickets falling within a couple of over's of each other.
Aaron Hinton, having failed to score a run in his previous innings this year was in a determined mood to stay in for the remaining over's and support the more free scoring batsmen at the other end. The remaining batsmen managed to take the score up to a healthy 168 on a slow wicket that was difficult to bat on.
After tea Boxmoor emerged to field, and look to keep Sarratt below the 168 runs target set and hopefully take the 10 wickets required. Opening down the hill was Chris Dunscombe keen to make up for his duck batting, bowled a good line and length and kept the runs tight too. At the other end another U-15 Prateek, who bamboozled the batsmen with his variety of spin and took a wicket on the last ball of his first over and repeated this feat in his second. Both openers bowled their 8 over's straight through with less than 50 runs on the board. Prateek finished with 3 wickets and Chris a one. Next on was Matt 'Pop' Larkin's who carried on where Chris had finished off and Bilal Mohammed another U-15 prospect who's aggressive style of bowling will always bring chance's to the game, which bought a catch from Pop. Billy after bowling his spell of 4 over's was replaced by Iggy who had the task of bowling through to the death.
Pop managed to get one wicket in almost identical figures to Chris, thanks to a catch from Chris who reacted brilliantly after the ball initially looked as though it had spilled, and bowled superbly to Sarrat's main threat tying him down when he started to look dangerous. This then left Billy to return this time down the hill this second spell included a fantastic trade mark catch from the skipper diving to his right and catching the ball two handed to remove Sarrats main threat of winning the game. Finally with less than 2 over's remaining another sharp piece of work by Adam Cullinane behind the stumps from Iggy's bowling to remove the final Sarratt wicket and giving Boxmoor a well earned win from a great team performance.
Other mentions must go to Chad and Jon who fielded fantastically and it was a pleasure to see the enthusiasm shown by all in the field and for sticking to the job in had for over 38 wickets. Also when Brook arrived he said it was good to see Pete Hills back behind the stumps before realising Adam was keeping!!!
