Redbourn v Boxmoor Cricket Club Under 9s on Thu 27 May 2010 at 6.00 pm
Boxmoor Cricket Club Won By 2 Runs

Match report Having won the toss we put Redbourn into bat, and with our usual accurate bowling we restricted them to 239 - 4 from their 16 overs, however we didn't exucute our fielding as well as we are capable of and we missed opportunities to take more wickets and to restrict the amount of runs that Redbourn scored, which almost cost us the game.

With a modest target to chase, we got off to a steady start and with 8 overs gone we had reduced the target down to just 19 runs and after the 3rd pair of Max & Larn had scored our highest partnership of 17 runs from their 4 overs, victory looked to be ours. What happened next shows that in sport you should never take anything for granted, needing 2 to win from 4 overs and with our leading run scorer Edward at the crease the win was as good as our.

Tight bowling from the Redbourn bowlers ensured the game went down to the final over, with the scores tied and one over to go, a wicket on the very first ball put us 6 runs away from victory, a wide followed by a dot ball and then a single from Lloyd put us back in with a chance of winning the game, needing 2 to tie and 3 to win from the remaining 2 balls the game was very much in the balance, however Edward struck the next ball for 4 and he defended the last ball expertly to ensure that we won the game by 2 runs.

In truth this wasn't our best performance of the season, it was a game that we should have won far easier than what we did. This in reflection is something we can take as a positive, once again our team spirit was excellent, the way the boys supported each other, encouraged and ultimately won the game as a team was first class. Hopefully the boys will continue to apply themselves during training and then reap the benefits during the matches when it really counts. The Redbourn coaches were very complementary about how our team conducted themselves on and off the pitch and I feel that the boys are a real credit to the club.

Last season our under 9 team lost a number of games by the odd run or two, this game was the first time that we have come out on the right side of a tight gsme, this shows how the squad has progressed since the winter nets, each member of the squad has improved their core cricket skills and this has enabled us to become a far stronger all round team, which is one of the reasons that we have achieved more success this season and I would be hopeful that we can continue this improvement into the second half of the season.
