Berkhamsted v Boxmoor Cricket Club Under 11s on Mon 28 Jun 2010 at 6.00 pm
Boxmoor Cricket Club Won by 3 wickets
Match report
Berkhamsted won the toss and decided to bat. I thought every player bowled really well. The boundaries were short and on a slope but we kept the bowling full and straight as we have been reminding the players week on week. This evidence was that 6 of the Berko players were clean bowled. There were also 2 great run outs that came from Jay but to limit them to 78 was a really excellent effort.
However Berkhamsted’s real strength is in their bowling. They got Tring out for 29 last week so we needed to be sensible and not play any rash shots. Max and George got us off to a great start by guiding the quicker balls for four. Max opening for the first time deserves a mention for his excellent batting. Berkhamsted pegged us back with some tight bowling despite Jay’s quick fire 15, However Charlie Beadle did very well for us by just hanging in there and steadying the ship with some good cricket shots that ensured that we didn’t collapse.
As we moved towards an exciting climax, David and Aidan came together to look to forge a partnership. They batted really sensibly against some good bowling taking the singles when they were available and hitting the occasional bad ball for 4. As we came to the last over 3 runs were required for victory. The first 3 balls were full and straight which Aidan played sensibly.
I hope you’ll understand as parents at this stage why I was telling the players to stay quiet on the sidelines. I can completely understand their excitement (and I was wanting to shout myself) but I needed David and Aidan to think clearly between themselves what they needed to do ( this is again part of their cricket development). I said very little to them but I thought that they stayed really calm and worked things out really well. Taking a single off the 4th ball so two were needed for victory. No run off the next ball and then David hit the final ball through the slips for 4 to seal an excellent victory.
