Boxmoor Cricket Club Sunday 1st XI v Bushey on Sun 09 May 2010 at 2.00 pm
Boxmoor Cricket Club Won by 70 Runs
Match report
On a gloomy cold day down at the moor, Aaron Hinton officially skippered the Sunday 1st XI for the first time, after the previous 2 weeks had been rained off. Despite a shower or 2 over night the pitch was playable, a green wicket with overcast conditions.
It started well for Boxmoor as Aaron won the toss and put Boxmoor into bat, a questionable decision perhaps.
Stan Williamson and Eran Kasthuriarachchi opened the batting. It was a tight start with Stan and Eran playing themselves in and putting the odd ball away for some runs. However after 5 overs Eran had his eye in playing some very nice shots which were sometimes stopping a foot or 2 from the boundry or racing across them. His shots were controlled and he was waiting for loose deliveries. Stan was playing a supportive roll and struggling to middle shots. When he did middle one it was straight to the fielder [N. Illyas], Stan [5] had seen the new ball off and put on a partnership of 43. In came Matt Chapman at 3. This was where the game stepped up another gear. Eran quickly raced on to 50 with Matt taking over from Stan with the support to Eran. Both batsman were now competing with each playing superb shots, Matt lofting some shots straight over the bowlers head for 4, Eran flicking his wrists. The 100 partnership came up then a few balls later Eran reached a ton, which was very well deserved from only 90 balls! Chapman in the 40's was working the ball around for singles until he reached 47 when he hit a huge 6 (and first of the match), narrowly missing cars parked on St Johns Road, what a way to bring up your first 50 for the season. Matt soon got out with a very good bit of fielding from A. Manzoor, a direct hit with Matt just out of his crease. Andy Potton, making his debut for the Boxmoor Sunday side and 2nd game for the club (in as many days), was in next. He played a sensible last 8 overs, making 10 not out, supporting Eran who was eager to add to his tally and help him on his was to beating the runs scored in a season record. Eran ended the innings on 157 not out, which included 2 6's (both after his century was reached) and 21 4's. The last over was perhaps the best of the lot from Eran, with 19 runs coming off the bat. Boxmoor had scored a mammoth and very good 248/2 from the allotted 40 overs.
A special mention in this match report for the teas, provided by Subway. Very nice and saves lots of work.
Boxmoor were confident after a superb batting performance and could afford to try something a bit different from the start. So skipper Hinton elected to bowl first, seeing a patch of dust at the pavilion end and hoping he could use the odd tennis ball bounce to his advantage he started from the Boxmoor end. First ball and S. Ahmed clipped the ball to Adam Norris at midwicket. Just what Boxmoor needed and was talked about in the pre innings huddle. A major wicket as a year ago Ahmed had got 116 vs Boxmoor. Hinton's first 2 overs were good and the ball was turning a good one and a half foot. However less said about the 3rd over the better, Hinton took a blow. At the other end the Boxmoor Bilal Mohammed (Billy) opened with his explosive pace. After an expensive 3 overs Billy found the spot and returned with a wicket maiden getting the other opening batsman out, S. Manzoor [14]. Billy earned himself 1 more over in this spell which was a mix of very good and bad. Making his debut for Boxmoor (and providing tea's from Subway) was Dilepp Sadhu (or Krishna - Hari for Andy Potton), he replaced Hinton at the Boxmoor end. Krishna bowled very well except for the odd ball which was wide. He also got the wicket of N. Illyas [39] who had been a steady rock that Bushey needed. The highlight of this wicket was Owen Adams face as the ball came towards him, however it was a good catch. Replacing Billy was Sunday 2's captain Stan Williamson who kept it tight until his last over which went for 10. John Scott (Scotty) followed on after Krishna and took a wicket with Andy Potton taking the catch in the slips. Adam Norris had his chance to bowl and was very economical and also got a wicket bowling Bedford out. Hinton returned for 1 over after Scotty and went for 3 runs (1 no ball and 1 wide) and after some shocking counting by Prateek who was umpiring bowled less balls than required. Owen & Eran finished the bowling off for Boxmoor. Owen during his last over bounced a 12 year old and caught him in the chest.
Fielding was generally good with bodies being used if hands couldnt get to the ball. A few drops, which were generally difficult chances. Some sharp work behind the stumps by Ryan 'Spud' Smart who deserved a stumping which was hotly contested. Stan Williamson got a direct hit on a runout in the last over when the other fielders wanted the 12 year old to get a run. Catches for Adam Norris, Andy Potton and 2 very good ones from Owen Adams.
All in all a good start for the Sunday 1's
